How to stop worrying about things you can’t control.

2 Mins read

Anxiety is one ingredient that never misses in our day to day living. It is almost impossible to escape this unwelcome, constant companion that shows up whenever it is not needed. That is why you will never find someone who finds you worried about something and all they do is to fuel it by encouraging you to worry even the more. It is even unimaginable that anyone in their right senses could do that. So, if it is completely unacceptable to be anxious, worried and full of fear, why do we always find ourselves here?

It is not very pleasant to talk about death but it is one thing that we all will encounter. Rather it is a doorway to the next life. Anyway, it came to mind that when death takes a loved one away, this is when the unwelcome guest of worry, fear and anxiety comes knocking on the doors of our hearts and it won’t go away until it is attended to. Have you ever lost a loved one or has anyone in your close circle lost a loved one? Can you visualize the darkness brought about by sadness, the questions that so bombard our minds about what will happen next? It is hard to imagine, let alone accept that someone we used to see everyday won’t be here for the rest of our remaining time.

We as human beings are fashioned with what I would call a deficiency, a need, a thorn in the flesh by our maker. I want to believe that the reason it is this way is so that we won’t be so full of ourselves to the point of disregarding and discrediting God who is all sufficient. He so desires this close fellowship with man and He will do anything to draw us closer to Himself. As John Piper notes, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him”

Numerous times in the Holy Word will you find God, His angels and prophets saying not to fear? Genesis 15: 1b “Fear not Abram, I am your shield and your exceeding great reward”, is an account of God re-assuring the father of Faith. This is not because Abram had been bereaved but because he was in a situation that was beyond human understanding and God knew it too well that fear would certainly visit him.

Will you be still and know that He is God? Assuredly, anxiety will come, fear is always pursuing and our hearts have mastered worry better than anything else. But in the midst of all this, it is only wise to be certain that no matter what comes our way, God is always there waiting for us to turn to Him and find rest, peace and calm in Him. So, child of the Most High, “Be Still and Know that I am God”, Psalm 46:10.
