It is impractical to talk about dreams without talking about the mind. Why do we dream?
I would hereby state categorically that dreaming is solely the function of the mind. This does not require scientific research because it is obvious that we dream when we are asleep but our mind is awake. Now, the human mind or the brain is always functioning in that it is the one responsible for sleep as well as the dream. This is because there is the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. I want to dwell on the subconscious mind. It is the part of the mind that stores everything that we are not aware of, some of which could have been learnt and are stored as memories. The subconscious mind is responsible for dreams.
Diving into the understanding of dreams, I would start with a question. What is the difference between saying; “I have a dream” as Martin Luther King, Jr. did and saying “I dreamt yesternight”? Obviously, the meanings portrayed are different. The latter describes the visual images that come to us at night as we sleep but what the former describes is an endeavour, a vision, a wish and more of a goal. As to whether the kind of dream that Martin Luther King, Jr. had is of the subconscious mind or not, I cannot tell but my focus is on the visual images.
I have often heard that there is a major connection between dreams and the spirit world. It is true that behind every dream that you experience, there is a cause or a factor. This means that perhaps you should take dreams seriously because they always carry messages that concern us and how we live. However, it is also true that one could experience a dream whose cause could be merely overeating before going to sleep and thus I could say such a dream has no significant message to the dreamer.
Dreams that re-occur time to time should not be at all ignored. If you identify a familiar dream, it needs action. You cannot take action towards a dream if you do not understand it and the question to the interpretation of dreams is one that requires specialists like Daniel who interpreted King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream. Another approach that most people take and I would not at all recommend is to consult witches and diviners. This is because they use dark powers and the answer to man’s mysteries can never ever be found in darkness. To save you from this I would say to seek meaning through prayer to God is the only sure way.
